Andrew Scherman's Chess Resume

 

1967  Taught Chess by Father in United States Virgin Islands at age eight.

 

1969-1970  Member of US V.I. team at the Pan American Championships. 

 

September 1970 Became youngest player ever to compete in the World Chess Olympiad at Siegen, West Germany, representing the United States Virgin Islands, at the age of eleven, a world record just broken in 2008.

 

1974 Led the United States Virgin Islands to the highest finish in its history in the World Chess Olympiad at Nice, France.  Was still youngest player in that event at age fifteen.  Placed 12th in the Championship of the Americas. 

 

July 14, 1993 Awarded USCF Life Master Title

 

1999 Finished Second in Florida in Action Chess

 

2000 Became President of the St. Petersburg Chess Club, the oldest continually-operational-on-the-same-site chess club in the United States. 

 

2001   Won Champinship of City of Jackonville.

 

2001  Was Chief Organizer of the Florida State Championship which drew 217 entries, the largest State Championship in the history of the event. 

 

2003  Named Florida Scholastic Chess League Organizer of the Year

 

2003 Won United States G/10 National Championship in Houston, Texas, retaining title in 2004, acknowledged in Chess Life magazine.

 

2006  Elected President of the Florida Chess Association.  Chief Organizer of 2006 Florida State Championship & World G/12 Championship.

 

2002-2007 Coached at Shorecrest Preparatory School and Wellington School and St. Petersburg High School.

 

2008  Chief Organizer of 2008 Florida State Championship & U.S. G/15. 

 

2009  Chief Organizer of Eight USF tournaments wit 100-plus players

 

Andrew was the first coach of Ray Robson, world’s youngest grandmaster
